Eczema is a common yet bothersome skin condition that affects millions of men, women, and children. Seasonal changes can be especially challenging with this inflammatory skin condition as warm weather and humidity aggravate the skin. Summertime invites a number of irritants for eczema-prone skin such as constant heat, annoying allergens, and prolonged dryness. Here are some ways to manage eczema during the summertime:
Regulate your body temperature
It’s hard to avoid the sun’s harsh rays during the summer. Unfortunately, sweat triggers eczema flare-ups especially in areas where you sweat the most such as the back of the knees or the inside of elbows. In order to limit irritating flare-ups, be sure to regulate your body temperature and avoid activities that increase sweat. In fact, have a fan or a cool water bottle ready after engaging in outdoor activities. Simply wearing a hat or loose-fitting clothing can also aid in retracting sweat from the body.
Keep your body moisturized and hydrated
Always wear sunscreen while engaging in summer activities such as swimming or sunbathing. Refrain from being in direct sunlight as that also dries out the skin. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water throughout the day to avoid overheating while engaging in summer activities.
A tip for sunscreen: go for products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as these ingredients decrease skin irritation.
For moisturizers in general, always go for natural ingredients and fragrance-free products. After a dip in the pool or a trip to the beach, be sure to rinse off immediately and apply a strong moisturizer such as shea butter.
Avoid Allergens
While you're basking in the sunshine or simply lounging indoors, allergens are present all around us. Allergens such as pollen and dust are common skin irritants that can lead to flare-ups. When returning from the outdoors, be sure to take a shower or rinse off any pollen or dust particles that may have followed you inside. I recommend using a gentle soap on eczema-prone skin especially during the summer. You can also use an air purifier to ward off dust and mold at home.
Having eczema does not mean you can’t enjoy great summer weather. Remember to keep cool, hydrate, and moisturize your skin in order to make the most out of this time of year.
