The Ultimate Natural Hair FAQ

The Ultimate Natural Hair FAQ

From wash days to nighttime regimens, we want to know what your natural hair questions are and answer them! Here are some of the frequently asked questions circulating the natural hair community, answered by yours truly!

Do I have to ‘big chop’ to go natural?

No! While the big chop is an easy and effective way to dive into natural hair, you can also transition your hair over time. With this method, you allow your natural hair to grow out without using heat and gradually cut off your damaged ends!

Can I straighten my hair often and still be considered ‘natural’?

The answer is YES. Your hair is considered ‘natural’ as long as the texture is not altered by chemical straighteners. If you straighten your hair without relying on a relaxer or texturizer, you are still a natural. That being said, straightening your natural hair too often can lead to heat damage.

How often can I use heat on my natural hair?

There is no set number of times you can use heat and withstand damage. It’s recommended to always wear a heat protectant when straightening or blow-drying; however, your hair will eventually feel the effects of heat damage if you’re using heat on a daily basis. Fortunately, there are several heatless stretching methods, allowing you to achieve the same look without the damage.

How do I know which products work best for my hair?

First step: identify your hair type AND hair porosity. These tools are essential for understanding which products work best for your hair. Second step: do your research. Look for products with natural ingredients that cater to your specific hair qualities. Third step: trial and error; experiment with different products and note how they affect your hair.
