Our Story
Â

African beauty wisdom did not overlook diverse skin. The mainstream beauty industry did.
Shea Radiance was born from that truth. When our co-founder Funlayo Alabi could not find products that worked for her children's eczema-prone skin, she turned to what she had always known: the healing traditions of West Africa, where women have nourished, protected, and cared for skin for generations using ingredients the mainstream market had not yet paid attention to. Raw, unrefined shea butter. Baobab oil. African black soap. Botanical knowledge passed between women across centuries in Nigeria, Ghana, and Mali.
That different starting point became our competitive edge. We call it A-Beauty, African Beauty: a philosophy that does not ask how you look to others, but how to nourish what you have been given. When you formulate for the most overlooked skin needs first, you create something that works for everyone. That is why Shea Radiance is for every woman, every background, every skin, and why we make no apology for where it comes from.
What We Make

We craft clean, effective skincare rooted in West African botanicals and refined through modern skin science. Our formulations are built on unrefined shea butter sourced directly from women-led cooperatives in West Africa, combined with ingredients that have centuries of proven efficacy: baobab oil, Kalahari melon seed oil, African black soap, chaga and tremella mushrooms, and colloidal oats.
Whether it is the deep nourishment of our Whipped Body Butter, the brightening power of our Mushroom Face Care Collection, or the quiet simplicity of our Raw Unrefined Shea Butter, every product begins with the same question: what does skin actually need? Not what does the market expect, not what trends suggest, what does skin need, at its most honest level. The answer, across fifteen years of formulation, has always pointed back to the same place: West Africa.
What We Believe

Pillar 1 — A-Beauty is the origin, not the alternative. Western beauty culture has long treated skin as a problem to solve, a canvas to correct, a thing to make presentable. A-Beauty begins from a different premise: skin is worthy of care, not because it needs fixing, but because it deserves nourishment. This is not a new idea. It is a very old one. We are simply making sure it receives the recognition it was always owed.
Pillar 2 — When you center the overlooked, you create excellence for everyone.
Shea Radiance was built for skin that the mainstream market did not fully serve: dry, sensitive, eczema-prone, melanin-rich skin that needs deep hydration and genuine barrier protection. In solving for those needs first, we created formulas that work beautifully for all skin. That is the A-Beauty advantage, and it is why every woman is welcome here, unapologetically and without qualification.
Pillar 3 — The supply chain is the story.
Every ingredient has a geography, a people, and a purpose. The shea butter in every Shea Radiance product begins with women: cooperative farmers in Nigeria, Ghana, and Benin who harvest and hand-process shea nuts using knowledge passed across generations. These are not anonymous suppliers. They are the origin of everything we make. When you nourish your skin with Shea Radiance, you are part of a supply chain built on expertise, equity, and one of the oldest beauty traditions on earth.
The Women Behind the Ingredient
In West Africa, shea butter is called Women's Gold, because for the 16 million women who harvest and process it, it is exactly that: a source of income, independence, and intergenerational security. Women use the proceeds to feed, clothe, and educate their children. The shea trade is not a side economy. For millions of families, it is the economy.

Our connection to these women has shaped every decision we have made as a brand. We source directly from women-led cooperatives, paying fair prices and building long-term buy-back arrangements so that demand is reliable and income is stable. We have provided training in quality improvement, group formation, and business development. We have invested in equipment that reduces physical labor and increases production capacity. We have supported programs that address health, literacy, and storage infrastructure across communities in Niger State, Nigeria.
We do this not because these women need rescuing. They do not. They are skilled, determined, and economically sophisticated. We do it because the partnership is genuine, the knowledge flows in both directions, and the relationship is at the center of what this brand is.
